Before it was settled properly in the 1800s, the St. Andrews Bay area was home to many native populations and was also an attractive draw for pirates. In fact, legend has it that many a pirate has hoarded treasure at Spanish Shanty Point on Shell Island. Although the area was settled properly in the years before, Panama City Beach was not officially founded until 1936. Surrounding the new city were other cities known as West Panama City Beach, Long Beach and Edgewater. Some years later, these four cities merged and kept the name of Panama City Beach. Panama City’s temperate weather, scenic beaches and ideal location make it a popular location for tourists and new residents.

Today, Panama City Beach is part of Bay County and has approximately 7,500 residents. From its award-winning beaches to St. Andrews State Park to premier golf courses to its countless restaurants, Panama City Beach has something for everyone. Watersports are obviously very popular here, and water babies can try every activity out there, from snorkeling to kayaking.

If you prefer to look at the water but not touch it, perhaps you would rather explore Panama City Beach’s many shops. From a store that is reminiscent of New Orleans’ French Quarter to a store that boasts 25,000 swimsuits, there is plenty to keep shoppers occupied. If you would prefer shopping on a larger scale, you can visit any of the numerous outlets located in the region or the nearby Panama City Mall.

Nightlife is also famous here in Panama City Beach. With all the glamour of a big city, but with a laid-back, Southern flair, nighttime is truly an experience. Every evening, a ceremonial cannon blasts to signal the close of a beautiful day and the beginning of an exciting evening. Dance the night away in any of the city’s hot clubs, or sip margaritas in some of the funky bars. Live entertainment also abounds in the form of comedy, jazz, beach music, country, big band and rock ‘n roll.
